This project focuses on the local sphere of people and places of German origin in the American Midwest. It is based on broader research on German immigration and settlement and German(ic) places, identity, and heritage in the region, published in 2007 and 2013 by Stephan Fuchs. It includes the assessment of local patterns and processes of migration, settlement, local heritage, and ethnic identity.
The analyses are based on a variety of sources such as (historic-)demographic data, personal interviews, material culture, and especially local place names. For an overview of German(ic) place names across the Midwest, please visit the German(ic) Place Names in the American Midwest website.
